I've been working on this email while getting ready. I've been up again since a little after 8:00 a.m. which means the turkey's been on the smoker four hours. As I write, take a break and come back here are the progress notes:
It's 9:21 a.m. Just got a call from my in laws. One of their toilets has a problem. I said no problem! Tell everyone to come on over here. So, it looks like we'll be eating Thanksgiving here this afternoon. That'll be fun (I think).
10:30 a.m. Just got word that one of Deb's brothers is bringing a port-o-potty to the in-laws' house. Back to the original plan. The turkey looks grrrrEAT!!! Got about 1/2 hour to go to get the temperature up to 180 185 degrees. Will make a note in the smoker directions that seven hours on this electric smoker is about right for an 18 lb. bird. Deb's making gravy from the giblets.
11:15 a.m. I've take an shower, shaved and was drying my hair when the circuit breaker blew on the bathroom outlet. That's OK, I was expecting it. For some reason that circuit is also on the same line as the front porch where the electric smoker is plugged in (in case it rained), so that went too. But, no problem. It was time for the bird to come off anyway. And she looks MAH velous.... positively glowing (the bird, not me).
11:45 a.m. The bird's under wraps in tin foil, keeping warm. The smoker grill and drip pan's been cleaned, and the smoker returned to the storage shed. On my last trip from the front porch I looked up and saw the door to the mail box on the street was opened, so I go for a closer inspection. Looks like sometime in the night I became the victim of someone with a bat who thought they could improve on it's shape. Can't say I share their artistic vision, but then art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder (or bat holder as the case may be). We leave for the in-laws in an hour (they're just a couple of miles a way).
12:31 a.m. My wife says it's time to load up the car, with the turkey and the gravy. 'Hope you are having a good time with your family.
3:02 p.m. We have returned. With less turkey and gravy than we left, but have brought back stuffing, ham, cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole, pumpkin and pecan pies. Not a bad deal, all around. The turkey was a hit. The wife is off to nap, and I return to our discussion.
