Thanks very much. My wife and I may go to the synagogue tonight, if we're not too bushed. I've got a long day ahead. She's not Jewish and I'm not observant, but she's interested in learning and friends invited us.
Please tell me about the service you attended. Hey, giving sporadic attention to our God is a family tradition that needs to be broken. I encourage you to get serious about your relationship with God. Be the "priest" in your home. That is a long standing tradition that should continue. One day, you will meet your Messiah.
A Christian friend at work went to a synagogue in Huntsville last evening for the blowing of the shofar. He said the message that followed was rather disturbing. It was about how to live in an anti-Semitic world. Is anti-Semitism that prevalent? I know the neo nazi and KKK groups supposedly are, but I've never met a member of one of those organizations (as I know of). The very concept seems so absurd to me. The rabbi also said one of the greatest enemies in the U.S. is the "Christian Right." Is this perception widely held in the Jewish community? I've never encountered an attitude of anti-Semitism in any Christian that I've known! I and those Christians I know pray for Israel and Peace in Jerusalem. We love the Jewish people. Our Saviour is Jewish. You are God's chosen people. While an officer in the Army, I paid particular attention to our national policy regarding Israel. I would have resigned before being on opposite sides of a conflict with Israel. How can we Christians (not to be confused with non-believing Gentiles) turn this attitude around?
My delight at finding that you were Jewish and would talk about religion was genuine. I have much to learn! I guess that is why I enjoy Chuck Missler's teaching so much. He really explains the Jewish perspective on Scriptures and events in both the OT and NT. I never knew the significance of the "hem of His garment" or that the lady with the issue of blood (Luke 8) was a Gentile, until Missler taught it. Such new knowledge is what I find exciting about studying the Bible. In his two tape set called "Betrayal of the Chosen," Missler goes through the ancient and current history of Israel. If you are interested, I'll make copies for you.
BTW, in one of Missler's studies, he conjectures that Jesus was born on Rosh Hashana. I don't remember the scripture reference(s) used to support this idea. He has a particular insight into the Jewish calendar and events associated context. We are told in 2 Tim 3:16 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:" The scripture Paul was referring to was what we now refer to as the Old Testament. That is all the had then. The Bible is not a collection of unrelated stories. God says in Malachi 3:6 "For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed." If He don't change, I think he can preserve the truth of His Word down through the ages. I'm told that the Isaiah in the Dead Sea Scrolls are essentially the same as in our modern renditions. The "gossip game" may work for humans, but not for God's Holy Word. The intricacies of its design defy human ingenuity!
